When a stranger comes knocking

When someone you don’t know comes to your front door, it can be scary, especially if you’re home alone. It’s okay to feel unsettled because it’s common for intruders to knock on the front door or ring the doorbell to see if anyone is home before attempting a break-in. It’s also not uncommon for criminals to pretend to be salespeople or maintenance professionals in order to get inside your home! If a stranger ever comes to your front door, here’s how to handle the situation:

- Take a look -
Before you even think about opening the door, always check to see whose there. Whether you have a peephole or security cameras, you should have some way to see who’s at the door first. Make sure you train yourself and everyone in your household, especially your children.

- Call to someone in the house -
It may sound a bit weird, but it’s not a bad idea to call out “I’ll get it!” or “can someone get the door?” before answering. Even if you’re home alone, calling out to an imaginary friend will make it seem like you’re not home all by yourself!

- Don’t ignore them -
If you see a stranger at your door, your immediate reaction might be to ignore them. However, if it is a potential intruder, they might be checking if it’s a good time to break in – when no one’s home! So it’s always better to say something or make a noise rather than ignore them and remain quiet.

- Respond without opening -
Always ask for strangers to identify themselves without opening the door. You may want to use an intercom system if you have one or simply talk through the door. If you don’t know who they are or they make you feel uncomfortable, ask them to leave immediately! If they say they’re here for maintenance, a survey or sales, always ask for identification first.

- Keep information to yourself -
A fishy stranger might ask you questions like “what hours do you work?” or “when will you be home tomorrow?” Don’t answer questions like these! Or any other questions about members of your household. If a stranger is particularly pushy or says they’re in trouble and need help, rather offer to call a police officer.

It’s easy to follow these tips and take precautions before opening the door to a stranger. Not everyone has ill intentions towards you and your family, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Why you shouldn’t set traps for burglars

Home security is an important factor to consider in your house, apartment, business etc. Many people think it may be wise or even fun to set a booby trap in order to possibly catch a burglar in the act! But there are a number of legal reasons and dangers involved in attempting to trap a burglar. Here are some reasons that might make you think twice before setting a trap for a burglar:

Booby traps are illegal – The most important reason to avoid attempting to trap a burglar is the fact that it is illegal! A booby trap is a concealed or camouflaged device designed to cause bodily harm when triggered by and action of a person making contact with the device. This term includes guns, ammunition, explosives, nails, spikes or toxic fumes and gases.

You probably believe that you can act in self-defense if an intruder enters your home, but it often happens that people who do just that find themselves facing legal action. So basically if you set up a trap to protect your property from intruders you will be responsible for any injury or death even if it is of a burglar.

You are putting yourself in danger – It may be tempting to try and catch a burglar in the act, even if the trap has no harmful effects. However, there really is no way to know how effective your trap will be in the event of a break-in.  Let’s say you decide to make a trap for a burglar and someone breaks into your home, there is a huge possibility that the trap might fail horribly and the burglar will be irritated and aware of your presence!

So you will never know how effective your trap will be until you test it out in real life, but why would you want to do that and put your family at risk? Instead it would be wise to consider a professional home security system from SIS – Security & Investigation Services. Always remember that even the best home designed trap isn't going to be as effective as a security system provided by a company specializing in home protection.

Leave it up to the professionals – While there are some safety precautions to deter burglars, use them in addition to a home security system monitored by a 24/7 professional monitoring team. Additional burglar deterrents include:
- Installing motion detecting lights outside your home
- Locking your doors and windows
- Placing security signs and decals on the exterior of your property
- Having a dog or a “beware of dog” sign
- installing fake or real security cameras around your home

Nonetheless, some individuals still decide to design and set their own traps for burglars. No one’s saying you shouldn't defend yourself from intruders. You just shouldn't set a premeditated trap for what you suspect might happen.

There are countless solutions to deterring criminal activity on your property, the main one being a monitored home security system. Contact SIS – Security & Investigation Services for a professional, reliable home security system.

The dumbest criminals in the world – Part 2

Most burglars aren't the sharpest tools in the shed; they could be why they chose a life of crime. Still, whether due to poor planning or panicking under pressure, some criminals stand out as especially dumb; here is part 2 of the dumbest criminals in the world.

No. 5
On March 23, 2010 in Fairfield, Connecticut, Albert Bailey and an unnamed juvenile accomplice decided to rob a bank. Bailey was clever enough to call the bank in advance and let them know that they were coming to rob it, his intention was to give the bank plenty of time to get the money ready so the two of them could just walk in, take the cash and leave!

After the call, Bailey sent in his juvenile accomplice along with a note to avoid any confusion in case the bank was waiting for another robber. Meanwhile a bank employee called the police and updated them about everything that was happening. The robbers demanded 100 000 Dollars but only got 900, they then walked out the bank into the arms of the police, who arrested them immediately without incident.

No. 4
In Omaha, Nebraska, Melissa Peters was getting ready to take her son to school, she headed to her car when she found 17-year-old Mganga Mganga pointing a gun at her face. They quickly fled and he entered the car to steal it, there was one problem though – the car had a manual transmission and Mganga had no idea how to use it.

What happened next was like something out of a movie, Mganga turned on the lights and the windshield wipers trying to make his escape! A neighbour called the police and it took them minutes to arrive and find an empty car sliding gently into the neighbour’s yard, knocking over the fence.

Mganga had made a run for it, so the police officers went after him on foot and had no problem catching up to him a few blocks away. At least he avoided weapons charge, as the gun turned out to be fake.

No. 3
Try to imagine what would make the worst target for a burglar, how about a house full of police officers? That’s what Darren Kimpton of Abington, Northampton chose. The home he selected had already been broken into earlier that night, so police officers were on the scene investigating when Kimpton broke in. he tried to make a run for it but he was captured after a brief struggle.

But, that wasn’t his first unsuccessful burglary of the day, he’d tried to break into a nearby house but failed to do so, he did manage to cut himself on some broken glass and leave blood at the scene so cops easily linked him to the crime!

No. 2
The target was Halifax Bank in London, this particular robber entered the bank with a gun in one hand a gun in the other, he demanded 700 000 Pounds in cash – so far, so good! Next, he planned to hand over his bag so the teller could fill it up with money; instead he got a bit confused and gave the teller the gun.

There was a moment of confusion and the robber tried to grab his gun back, but the teller was clever enough to grab it and point it at him! Even so, the robber still managed to make a run for it and he didn’t go away empty handed, as he pedaled off on a bank employees bicycle.

No. 1
A good disguise obviously needs to hide your true identity and it also needs to help you blend in with the crowd, the disguise that Dennis Hawkins chose, failed on both counts. His disguise was this: a woman’s blonde wig, a pair of fake breasts and clown pants. The first problem was that the silly get-up revealed his face, which was captured on camera and if he wanted to fool people into thinking he was a woman he should’ve thought about getting rid of his mustache and goatee.

The second problem was that the disguise was far from conspicuous; right after the police releases a description to the public, a gas station attendant called to report someone wearing the unique look while trying to steal a car. And as if that wasn't noticeable enough, when the police arrived they found Hawkins covered in the red paint from a dye pack exploding in his face.

To prove that he was completely brainless, he tried to mug a woman and get away with her car before the robbery, but she ran off, taking the car keys with her!

So it’s clear that for every criminal mastermind there is a total numbskull sitting in a cell somewhere because they didn't have two brain cells to rub together when they decided to go through with their illegal acts.

For all your home security and business needs, contact SIS - Security & Investigation Services, they can provide you with anything ranging from general guarding and farm protection to CCTV off site and alarm monitoring.

The dumbest criminals in the world – Part 1

Not everyone is suited for a life of crime, we avoid it because we realise that it would be wrong to be a part of illegal activities. And then there is another special group of people – people who attempt a life of crime but really shouldn't because they are just plain horrible at it!

No. 10
In August 1995, a man named Klaus Schmidt tried to rob a bank in Berlin by walking in with a pistol and demanding money, pretty standard right? Well after a while the bank employees started noticing that the criminal was acting rather strange, at one point one of them asked if he needed a bag, and he replied “You’re damn right it’s a real gun!” It was then when they realised that Klaus Schmidt was deaf!

The employees took advantage and set off the alarm, obviously Schmidt couldn't hear a thing, even as the police approached the bank! When the deaf criminal was taken into custody he tried to turn a negative into a positive – by trying to sue the bank for exploiting his disability!

No. 9
In 2011 there was a police sting in Derbyshire, the police used a strategy of offering wanted criminals free beer. The criminals received notices through undercover officers informing them that they’d won a crate of beer each. To collect the beer they need to contact the company that ran the promotion.

Believe it or not, many were tempted by the offer. Nineteen wanted criminals called the number and set up a time and place to collect their free beer! Tragically for them there was no free beer when they turned up, only police officers ready to take them into custody.

No. 8
In 2008, an 18-year-old Ruben Zarate wanted to rob a muffler shop in Chicago, he entered the shop with a gun and demanded money, but there was one problem – most of the money was locked away in the safe! Only the manager could open the safe and the manager wasn't in, so Ruben decided he would try again later and he left his cellphone number with the store employees, that way they could call him when the manager returned.

First, however the employees called the police and then they called the robber and when the bright spark criminal returned he found the officers waiting to arrest him.

No. 7
Sometimes the criminal makes it almost too easy for the police, like the case when a Boston Robber snatched a woman’s wallet and left behind something that belonged to him – his birth certificate!
The man, named Zachary Tentoni stole a wallet containing just 40 Dollars in cash and the victims ID, but during the struggle he dropped two bags of his own. To make things worse for poor Zachary on the very top of one of his bags was his birth certificating and as if that wasn't enough the bag also contained a letter from his mom revealing his address!

Zachery obviously realized his dumb mistake because when the police contacted him he pretended to be someone else, but he failed when the victim identified him immediately.

No. 6
A fast car or a motorbike is a good choice for a getaway vehicle; do you know what isn't a good choice? A 10-year-old donkey! A gang of thieves in Columbia abducted a donkey named Xavi from his owner and proceeded to rob a convenience store. The heist went pretty well and they loaded their goods onto the donkey and prepared to make their escape, but Xavi didn't want to cooperate.

Up until that point, the police were not aware that the robbery had taken place, but good old Xavi started making so much noise that he attracted the attention of some nearby officers. The robbers ran away on foot, leaving behind Xavi and of course, all of their goods!

Summer home security tips

Summer is here and when we think of summer we think of pool parties, suntan lotion and enjoying a beach vacation, but there is one downside it is also the season for burglars. When you’re busy enjoying the warm, fresh air you can become lazy and people tend to leave doors, windows and blinds wide open. Plus summer is the season when you and your family would like to get away; here are a few things you need to know.

Why does crime increase during the summer?
Research shows that the average burglar is male and under the age of 25 and the peak age for property crime arrest is just 16, but why is this relevant? Because most 16-year-olds are out of school during summer and summer is the most popular season for family holidays and burglars love to target empty homes. The crime increase isn't about the weather conditions; it’s about opportunity and circumstance!

Installing professional home security
If you don’t have a security system your home is three times more likely to be burglarized than a secure home, so make sure you invest in a quality home security system. For instance, Contact SIS – Security &Investigation Services for a professional, high-quality home security service! If you are planning to travel during the summer, consider purchasing security cameras or motion activation technology.

Double up on security
A home security system makes an excellent deterrent, but it isn't the only one, if you want to maximize your security for the summer you might want to invest in some of these things:
- If you don’t have a dog, you might want to buy a dog bark alarm that will ward off potential intruders with realistic barking sounds.
- Install a dummy camera if you can’t afford a real surveillance system. Burglars can’t tell the difference and the sight of a camera will scare them away instantly.
- Finally, get some yard signs and decals and place them around your home.

Start a neighbourhood watch program
Now that the summer sizzle is in the air, this is the perfect time to start up a neighbourhood watch program. If you’re not sure how to get it started, check out my helpful Easy ways to make a safer community post. When you get the entire community involved, you can sleep easier at night and enjoy full-on security at all times.

Businesses: take note
If you run business it is absolutely essential that you have a quality security system in place. Did you know that commercial theft, like home invasion increases during summer and it is especially bad in the month of December. If you step up your security plan today you’ll be more ready for summer and the holidays.

Don’t wait until it’s too late to make sure your home or business is perfectly secure for summer, get a head start on your summer safety strategy! When you take control of your security tan today you can spend your summer focusing on more important things, like your tan.

How to stay safe during load shedding

Get your candles and your torches ready because there may be more load shedding on the cards for a long time to come. With power cuts happening all across the country at random times during the course of the day, it can cause people to feel unsafe in their own homes, especially at night. Some private security companies said that load shedding can wreak havoc with alarm systems and the signals sent to your security provider’s control room.

Many people believe that their home alarm system is deactivated when the power supply is interrupted, however, all modern alarms should have a backup battery pack that automatically activates when the electricity is cut.

When load shedding happens in your home,  keep in mind that it can increase the possibility of a false alarm activation and even though you might have a backup battery pack for your alarm system, it is important that your test your alarm on a regular basis.

Testing your alarm is a simple procedure which will take less than five minutes of your time. Make sure the testing is done as early as possible so that technicians can address any problems that they may find.

During power cuts burglars see one thing – opportunity. They are the most comfortable in the dark and can easily break into your home without being seen, especially if your alarm system has gone haywire. That’s why it is important to remember to lock all your doors and make sure your windows are closed and secure. Light candles and torches ton provide some light, but never leave an open flame unattended!

If you don’t want to be caught unawares, you should consider installing LED technology which is combined into the alarm systems wiring and will automatically switch on for a maximum of 15 minutes when the electricity cuts out.

When the dreaded load shedding happens, it’s simply inconvenient and it could be potentially dangerous too! Remember to check the schedule ahead of time to make sure you are safe and secure in your home.

For a professional home security system contact SIS - Security & Investigation Services, they can provide you with a variety of services from guarding and farm protection to CCTV off site and alarm monitoring.

The history of the burglar alarm

The burglar alarm has been around for thousands of years, the most basic alarm used long ago by ancient humans was the dog! In 30 000bc dogs would help protect property and guard against people trying to steal valuables.

In 3150bc moats were used as alarm systems to protect the castles and fortress during dangerous times, they were the first line of defense in keeping people secure during ancient Egyptian times. Over time, humans evolved and use other tricks like chimes to warn against burglars, the burglar alarms these days are far more complicated and use advanced technology.

In 1852, Edwin Holmes invented the first electric alarm system in Boston, his basic design had a tripwire that electrically powered a solenoid that struck a gong when it was set off. Holmes then decided to start a business and move to New York. In 1905 the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) bought the Holmes business, they used the advanced electrical grid that was in New York and linked the personal burglar alarms to police and fire departments.

Starting in the 1970s, a lot of alarm systems came equipped with motion sensors, they used basic ultrasonic technology that was emitted from a sensor and reflected back. If there was an change in sound the alarm would go off.

When the 1980s came along, there were improvements to motion sensors that merged with other technologies. Motion sensors then began to use infrared technology to avoid false alarms and establish full home protection systems.

Throughout the 1990s the prices on home security systems fell quite a bit. Many companies offered free installation packages with a monthly fee. The system was combined with not only safety services, but also phone support from the company itself.

These days alarm systems are so advanced many of us can’t even keep up! Forget about trying to dig a moat around your house or using an orphaned wolf pup as security, the alarm systems we have today are almost futuristic. Face recognition systems and alarm systems controlled by your smartphone, we can only wonder what alarm systems will be like in a few years.

For an advanced, reliable home security system, contact SIS - Security & Investigation Services. They offer a wide range of services, from guarding and farm protection to CCTV off site and alarm monitoring.

The link between your yard and home security

Did you know that the state of your yard can really impact the chances of your home being burglarized? It’s a fact that burglars will scan the neighbourhood and search for ideal targets; some of the things they look for are the luxuriousness of your house, visibility of your valuables and the signs of a home security system. But these aren't the only factors, read through these facts and make sure your home is extra safe.

Tall trees and bushes attract burglars
If your home is looking like the Amazon Rainforest, it’s time to get out the weed eater! Homes with many trees, vines and plants will draw burglars in – the overgrowing distractions will provide a great cover. Burglars prefer to be seen as little as possible and some people make it all too easy for them to stay hidden, so it’s best to always remember to keep your trees trimmed and foliage at a minimum. The last thing you want is for burglars to be tempted to sneak onto your property under the cover of darkness!

Fencing is also problematic
Be weary of tall fences, often they can be more inviting to a burglar than tall trees and bushes. It may seem strange because fences are supposed to keep people out, but its important to be aware that they could also double as a hiding spot. If you have a tall fence covering part of your house, you may want to think about upgrading your home security or replacing it with a tall gate.

An unkempt lawn means you’re not home
Maybe you just haven’t gotten around to mowing the grass lately and your lawn as become tall, wild and completely out of control, you should know that an unkempt lawn can draw the interest of burglars. Having an unmanaged lawn sends a message that you might be away on holiday for a long time! Yes, we all hate yard work, but it’s important to keep our grass and weeds in order at all times, it’s not just about having the best looking lawn on the block!

Yard signs make a great addition
How do you decorate your yard? Flower beds? Gnomes? Pretty benches? Well, you might want to think about adding a couple of home security yard signs to the mix! Even if you don’t actually have a home security system installed you can still scare burglars by posting signs on your wall and windows with home security logos and warnings.

All a well-kept yard needs is a lawnmower, a pair of clippers , the services of an actual gardener or home security system. A burglar loves an easy target, and your landscaping may be drawing them in!

Take your home security to the next level with a quality home security system from SIS - Security & Investigation Services, they pride themselves on protecting your home or business.

The best times to buy a home security system

So when is the best time to buy a home security system? You might think you know the answer: when you buy a home or move into a new place, but there isn't one right answer to that question. Here are some of the best times for you to get busy installing your home security system…

*You just moved*
You've just moved into a new flat or apartment, you have a van full of your most important possessions sitting right outside for the whole world to see. Whenever you move, everything you own is right out in the open, and anyone can take a quick peek.

There’s a myth that home security systems aren't an option for you if you’re renting a place, this isn't true at all. Gone are the days of drilling holes in walls just to install your security system, many security systems are specially designed for people who rent apartments or flats.

*You just bought really nice equipment*
The whole neighbourhood officially knows about your brand new 3D flat screen TV and your Porsche shining through your garage windows. It’s okay, it’s natural to want to show off your new stuff to your friends and neighbours, it’s horrible to have to live in fear of someone knowing you've got them and then stealing them.

While you’re busy showing off your new equipment why not show off your fancy home security system too, that way word will spread that no one should attempt to burgle your home. Keep in mind that its also a good idea to take extra precautions and cut up the boxes from your new toys before you place them outside your home by the bin.

*You’re going on vacation*
It’s the festive season, so why would you want to spend your whole holiday worrying about if someone has broken into your home or not? That one Facebook picture of you relaxing on the beach in Miami could be all it takes to convince a burglar to get up and take advantage of your unprotected home.

Majority of burglaries take place when no one is home and when your one vacation this means an even longer period of time when no one is checking in. there is one simple solution – get a home security system! An alarm system and an alarm monitoring service and you’ll know about anything that happens while you’re enjoying your holiday.

*You've got a new roommate*
A new roomie can come with a lot of interesting baggage: forgetting to lock the door or a crazy ex-lover. So even if you are super careful with your security, that doesn't mean that your new roomie will be too. Getting a home security system will help to remind your roommate, plus you can always be in control of your flat or apartment from wherever you are.

Always remember that your roommate is new so make sure to inform them about services and visitors - they won’t know that you don’t have a monthly carpet cleaner coming in and could let in a potential burglar.

You don’t need to sit and wait for the “right time”? The truth is the best time to get a home security system is before you need it. Not after your house has been burgled, you never know what could happen. Getting a home security system is like wearing a seat belt in your car, chances are you’re not going to crash, but wearing it will make sure you are protected if you do. So if you’re driving through life always make sure to wear the seatbelt that is your home security system, and put it on before you have an accident!

For all your home security services contact SIS - Security & Investigation Services, they over a wide variety of services ranging from CCTV off site and alarm monitoring to general guarding and farm protection.

Weird home security devices that might actually work

There are many home security products available, most of them are fairly straightforward, like the average home security system or motion activated lights. On the other hand there are many strange and unusual devices that have been made in order to keep your home safe, here are some of the weirdest home security solutions:

FakeTV The FakeTV is a cheap, clever home security measure. Having a timer or timed lights is a common security feature, but the FakeTV Burglar Detergent is something else entirely. It is a clever little gadget that that emits a light that is supposed to be the same as the glow from your TV, giving burglars the impression that someone is at home watching TV.

SmokeCloakThe SmokeCloak is the top of the line product for security fog, it is said to be highly effective, because burglars cant steal what they can’t see, right? The smoke from SmokeCloak is odorless and harmless, so it might be one of the few strange security products that actually work effectively.

Meet Tango This is a clever home security audio that gives nosy neighbours and burglars the impression that there is a big, noisy dog in your house. Meet Tango is sold on CD and MP3 format and the audio can be played for as long as needed, while it might not be the most effective solution it is simple and cheap!

The Mosquito If you have a problem with people loitering near your business or home then this just might be the solution for you. The mosquito makes an annoying buzzing sound at a frequency that only people aged between 13 – 25 years can hear, but there’s also a setting to annoy adults older than that too!

To be fair, some of these devices are clever and made add a level of security to your home, but majority of them are weird, useless and show how much people misunderstand about home security, they’re much better as harmless items for entertainment and a few laughs.

For a proper, professional home security system, contact SIS–Security & Investigation Services. They’ll protect you, your home and your business without any fake TV’s, security fog or annoying sounds.

Easy ways to make a safer community

I know that being best buddies with your neighbour isn’t the most enjoyable thing to do, they could become really nosy and end up annoying you, but one of the easiest ways to cut down on crime rates and reduce your chances of burglary in your home is to be an active member in the community! Talking to your neighbours, starting a neighbourhood watch and interacting in your community are free and simple to do (depending on how friendly your neighbours are).

Get to know your neighbours
The best watchdogs you could ever have for your home are your neighbours! Mrs. Curious who always walks her dog in front of your house and Mr. Nosey who likes peeking through his blinds constantly are actually your best bets for someone who will carefully monitor your home. When new neighbours move in the number one rule is to try to be extra friendly, make sure to introduce yourself and they’ll become familiar with you. Getting to know your neighbour – no matter how painful it is – means getting comfortable with their habits and you’ll be more likely to notice when something is out of the ordinary.

When you go out of town always let your closest and most trusted neighbour know, fill them in on what to expect whether it’s the timers for the lights or the pet sitter coming over to feed Fluffy. If anything goes wrong they can spot it right away and contact you right away, make sure to return the favour when they’re out of town.

Start a neighbourhood watch program
If you start a neighbourhood watch program you can easily cut back on crime, begin by investigating crime rates and reports in your neighbourhood. The next step is to form a small committee to address the needs in your area and then notify your local police department that you want to start your group.

As a neighbourhood watch, it’s important that you hold meetings and come together to see what you can do to increase safety in your community and don’t forget to include every member of your neighbourhood for the best results, whether they are, old, young, married or single.

Create change through your local government
Although the government is not exactly the best example of things getting done quickly, your local city council members are the best people to talk to. If you’re ever concerned about your street being too dark or having too many potholes, you need to let them know because you know your community best. It takes the work of concerned citizens to truly enact change in the local government and it definitely takes a huge amount of patience.

I takes an entire community to make things safer, so take advantage of your nosy neighbour! The change might not be immediate, but the results you see on the long run will definitely be worth it.

For a reliable, high standard and professional security service, contact SIS - Security & Investigation Services, they offer anything from guarding to farm protection.

7 common homeowner mistakes – A burglar’s view

Do you know how a burglar thinks? A lot of research has been done lately to really see what’s going on in the mind of a burglar, and what exactly leads them to target your home instead of the one next door. Here are some things your neighbourhood thief doesn't want you to know:

- Ladders are awesome
Do you know how easy it is for me to climb through a second story window when there’s already a handy ladder leaning against your house or hiding behind your shed! You probably aren't even worried about locking your upstairs windows when your front door is bolted up tight, ladders just make breaking in a walk in the park.

Solution: Keep all your windows and doors locked, even the windows on the second floor and always make sure any ladders are hidden away in the garage or shed.

- Rubbish is like a catalogue
The holidays are the best time of the year, I can rummage through your trash and find out exactly what’s in your house. Where did that brand new flat screen TV’s box go or the box for your fancy new iPhone? It went in the bin, great!

Solution: Never, ever leave boxes of expensive items outside your house by the bin. If its possible take them directly to the garbage dump.

- Piles of mail are a dead giveaway
Who lets there postbox overflow and pile up? People on holiday, that’s who! I’m going to be pretty serious about robbing a house that’s so obviously empty.

Solution: Before you leave to go on holiday call the post office and tell them to hold your post until you’re back, or you can just get a neighbour or friend to collect your mail for you.

- Untrimmed bushes and dark areas are my favourite hiding spots
The more overgrown your bushes are, the more excited I am to hide in them especially if they’re near a window! Even better there are no outside lights that are set off by motion, now I can break into your home and you won’t even notice me.

Solution: Make sure your bushes and trees are as neat as possible so they don’t double as hiding spots, it is also a good idea to install motion sensor outside lights for extra security.

- Nothing is better than an alarm system with a view
I simply love being able to see your alarm system, whether it’s in a reflection or through a mirror I can easily see if its armed or not and tell what I’m getting myself into. You’d be surprised how many times reflections and mirrors have helped me break in.

Solution: If you’re planning to leave the house or go on holiday and your alarm system is visible through a window or in a reflection make sure to cover it up properly with blinds or shades.

- Burglars love Facebook too
When you sit and brag about your trip to Miami or post pictures of your current location in Cancun, I definitely won’t like it, but I will like breaking into your home, knowing that your house is empty.

Solution: It’s so tempting to post pictures and statues about your amazing trip in real time, but it’s safer to just wait until you've returned home.

- Dark houses are the main attraction
If the lights in your home aren't on for 7 days straight it’s a dead giveaway that no one is home, I like to wait a few days just in case, but if no one shows up, I get the show on the road!

Solution: Install a timer in some rooms that will turn lights on and off, that way your house will look lived in. burglars will be more cautious to break into a home if they see changing lights at different times of the day.

When a burglar does decide that your home is the one, only a monitored alarm system has the power to ensure that emergency personnel are dispatched to your home immediately, contact SIS – Security & Investigation Services for a professional home security system, they pride themselves on protecting your home or business.

Where to place your panic button

Having a home security system can do more than just protect your windows and doors when you’re away, they can protect you and your loved ones when you’re home, whether or not your system is armed – just add a panic button!

Where to place a panic button?
A panic button can be placed almost anywhere in your home, the most common place is in your bedroom, right next to your bed. This ensures that if you hear any strange noises nearby, you’ll be able to trigger the alarm immediately!

Here are some great places to put your panic buttons:
- On your nightstand or on the wall next to your bed for easy access
- In your children’s bedrooms (make sure they know to only push it in an emergency).
- Under your desk in your home office. You may spend a lot of time alone; working late in your office, having a panic button available will allow you to alert others quickly in an emergency.

If you own a business, you can also use a panic button with your system to keep yourself and your employees safe. A panic button would work well under a counter, receptionist desk or in any room where you keep valuables.

Silent or audible alarm?
When you set up your panic button you might get the choice to choose if your panic button will trigger the siren of your home security system or if you’d rather like it to be a silent alarm. Ask yourself a few questions:

“Who will be using the button?”
“How close are your neighbours?”
“Would anyone hear the siren?”
“Do I live alone or with others?”
“Do I want to have monitoring?”
“How close is the local law enforcement to your home or office?”

If you would rather have a silent alarm then monitoring is definitely a necessity, this way a signal will be sent to the home security company immediately. If you choose to have an audible alarm and you trigger the panic button the company will phone you first and if they are not able to get hold of you they will send emergency personnel, an intruder will not stick around when an alarm is going off!

Having a panic button is a great feature to add to your home security system, if you place them strategically around your house you can ensure that yourself, your family and employees are safe and sound.

Pets and home security systems

Most people consider their pets to be part of the family, and protecting your home and family is your first priority. No matter what pet you have, whether it be a dog, cat, hamster, goldfish, rabbit or Bengal tiger, they’re an important part of your life and your home security system should benefit them too. Here are some facts and tips about pets and security systems that explain that the two of them can actually mix well!

It is believed that because you have a large dog or animal in your house you don’t need a home security system. Yes, dogs can be great at smelling or hearing an intruder long before your home security system detects them, but they’re only part of making your home safe and secure.

Security systems are monitored 24/7, which means whenever or whatever the emergency, someone will respond right away and get you the help you need. Dogs on the other hand need sleep so they’re not a 24/7 service and unfortunately they can’t make phone calls to the police or other emergency services when you need them.

Another reason pet owners don’t really want a home security system is because they worry that their pet will set off the alarm, your smaller pets might move around after you've armed your alarm, they either break a beam or they’re picked up by the sensors – the alarm will then be triggered. There are many ways you can avoid having your pet accidentally trip the alarm system.

A variety of home security systems are pet-friendly though! These alarms are only set off by a certain weight, so your pets weighing less than that will be able to wonder around your home carefree. Another option is Passive Infrared sensors (PIRs), they’re made to be resistant to picking up animals, so they won’t be set off when they sense your pets.

Pets and home security systems are a great combination, no matter what you may have heard before. Pets make good company and they often make your home so much more secure. Having both a home security system and a pet will protect your loved ones and make your life more enjoyable.

If you would like to find out more about home security systems or any other security products and services contact SIS - Security and Investigation Services, they offer everything from general guarding to farm protection for your home and business.

How to avoid those nosey neighbours

Don’t get me wrong a good neighbour is great to have, they can improve your experience living in a community and they can help protect your home. A good neighbour can watch your home when your away, pick up your mail or even report suspicious activity around your house, but there is a line that needs to be drawn. Just because you may have become friends with your neighbour doesn't give them the right to snoop on your home! Take a look at these tips to keep your nosey neighbour from getting a little bit too invasive:

* Block their view
There’s nothing creepier than that feeling when you know someone is watching you! A tall fence, line of trees or some hedges can keep those nosey neighbnours out of your hair, just make sure the trees or hedges are trimmed and maintained so they don’t become hiding spots for criminals.

* Change your curtains
There are a wide variety of different curtains and blinds you can buy, I've heard of blinds that open from the top instead of the bottom or maybe buy some lined curtains that you can hang on your windows to block their view.

* Add a privacy window film
Basic films can be installed on your windows so your windows are tinted but light is still let in, you can insert and remove them yourself, which means you can keep your neighbour’s unwanted eyes out.

* Install security cameras
Security cameras are not only useful for keeping out burglars, but they can also keep your nosey neighbour’s from invading your space! Let’s face it, no one wants to be caught on camera snooping around where they shouldn't be.

* Place signs on and around your house
Every security provider can include signs to place around your home to indicate the security system is there, it’s good for their business plus it’ll put your nosey neighbour off if they know they're being watched.

It’s amazing to have a helpful neighbour, it’ll make you happy to know your home is being looked after when you are away, but while it’s great to have them around, we all need to have our privacy!

Home security system myths movies taught us

Somewhere in the future, if you ever have to fend off a horde of hungry zombies, you probably don’t want to take security tips from any movies especially Resident Evil. Like a lot of home security systems in movies, they give a false sense of what security systems actually do, but that doesn't mean there aren't some great products out there, however here are a few movie security systems that are a bit off from reality:

RESIDENT EVIL
In the movie there is a scene where a certain room that will lock down on both ends when an intruder walks into it, a wall of lasers is then activated to cut through anything in its path. A home security system like this doesn't exist and it probably never should! The home security system is also run by an artificial intelligence that later decides to start murdering, in the real world security systems haven’t reached that crazy level quite yet.

THE PURGE
The family in this film live in an impenetrable fortress, at the touch of a button fortified walls and windows will fall into place, protecting them from the dangers outside. The concept that a whole house could lock down in this way is a little unrealistic and highly unlikely.

PANIC ROOM
The panic room found in this movie is actually surprisingly accurate, except they could've portrayed things a bit better. Some panic rooms can protect you from fires and explosions, some also come equipped with fridges for storing food, phones, backup generators and oxygen scrubbers to clean the air, these things definitely would've come in handy in the movie.

THE PACIFIER
If you remember the movie you’ll know Vin Diesel hopping from one panel to another in order to disable the homes security system, unfortunately you won’t have to do a special dance in order to beat your home security system anytime soon, technology isn't quite there yet. Realistically this method definitely wouldn't be the most efficient way to protect your home either.

Though they won’t be very useful to fight off zombies, murderers or government agencies, home security systems are still a great investment. The security offered by SIS – Security & Investigation Services will do a great deal to protect you and your loved ones from more realistic threats, like robberies and home invasions.

How to avoid false alarms

What is a false alarm? A false alarm happens when a signal sent to the central station from a security system does not signal an actual emergency! A false alarm can happen to anyone and it can be caused by a number of things like a malfunction in the security system or you could set it off accidently, luckily there are a few easy steps everyone can take to help prevent false alarms:

Get familiar with the security system
Make sure to schedule a short familiarization period when you install the security system, this will let you ensure that the system is working properly.

Make sure everyone knows how to use the system
Everyone who has permission to be in your home should be trained on how to use the system, this includes family member, relatives, babysitters, cleaners etc.

Debrief with everyone after a false alarm happens
Odds are you will experience at least one false alarm , when this happens it is important that you take the time to identify what triggered the system so you can prevent false alarms in the future.

Ensure your security system is functioning properly
Contact your security provider if you suspect your security system might not be working properly; they can perform some tests to see if the system is working right.

Maintain your alarm system
Spider webs, dust, loosened detectors and sensors can all cause false alarms, regular maintenance and inspecting prevents false alarms from happening.

Secure all points
Before you leave you property it is a good idea for you to check that all your windows and doors are tightly closed, especially on windy days when they can blow open and trigger the alarm.

A security system is a valuable addition to any home, it offers you as a home owner peace of mind , but the downfall is that false alarms can distract our emergency services from actual emergencies, so consider these ways to reduce the risk of false alarms.

What will home security be like 100 years from now?

Have you ever wanted to see the future? For years people have tried to guess what will happen in their lives years from now, but what will our home security be like in the future? There are a few obvious trends that have been occurring these days that you’re probably getting excited about, here are a few things that you might be seeing in your home and security system in the next 100 years:

      ·         Complete Automation
In the future its quite predictable that computers will become much smarter and much more in tuned with the daily things we do, in 100 years don’t ever expect to flip a light switch or turn on your coffee machine because your home automation system will probably be able to anticipate your needs and activate any piece of your home.

      ·         Health Tracking
You've probably already seen people wearing fitness trackers while they jog or workout, in the future a lot more people will be using these! Your fitness tracker will be able to tell you exactly what you need and when you need it plus it will be connected to your home automation system.

      ·         Anticipate Everything
Being prepared will be easy in the future because of devices, computers and the internet becoming more connected. These days home security systems can already warn you of weather alerts and emergencies, 100 years from now you’ll know what’s coming days or weeks in advance.

      ·         Facial Recognition
Imagine if facial recognition could be built into our home security systems, everyone has already heard about it in movies and Facebook so in the near future you could be watching TV on your couch and be able to tell you is at your door without even getting up.

      ·         Robots and Maids
This may sound a bit far-fetched to you now, but in the future its highly likely that your home will be taken care of by automatic systems and robots, just like in many movies. An automatic vacuum that makes its way around your house cleaning the floors has already been invented, so who’s to say it’s not possible!

The future is unknown and it can hold many surprises for us, you can’t say for sure what new devices, technology and security systems will be introduced, but whatever comes it’s important that it’s a part of making our lives a lot more secure and safe.

6 tips to make sure your garage is secure

When you think about home security, your garage probably hasn't even crossed your mind; this could cause a problem for you and your loved ones because facts show that the garage is one of the biggest home security vulnerability areas. You may keep certain items inside your garage like power tools, lawnmowers and of course your precious car!

Once the burglars have gotten into your garage, it’s so much easier for them to access the rest of your home. Try these tips to protect yourself and secure your garage.

Install a security system
The best line of defense is to install a security system in your garage that links up to your home security system, that way if anyone tries to enter through your garage the alarm will sound and alert the security company.
When it comes to choosing the right security company, there are a lot of things to consider, contact SIS – Security & Investigation Services and they can provide you with all your security needs.

Keep your windows covered
Always keep your garage windows covered with curtains or blinds, you don’t want potential burglars to be able to see inside and see valuable items they can steal.

Upgrade to motion detector lights
It’s a good idea to upgrade your lights in and around your garage to motion detector lights, when they detect moving objects  the light will turn on and stay on for some time, this can scare away any burglars that prefer to stay hidden in the darkness.

Secure the garage door
If you have a door that leads from the garage into your house, it should be as secure as all the other external doors on your house, you want to stop any intruders that have entered your garage from making it into the rest of your house. Make sure it is fit with a lock and made of a sturdy material.

Don’t leave your garage remote in the car
Never leave your garage remote opener in your car, this gives a burglar easy access to your garage, whether you are parked in your garage, at the office or in your driveway for the night. Rather take your remote inside your home with you and keep it in a safe place.

Use timers
Forgetting to close the garage can happen to anyone, you may be in a rush or the kids just forgot to push the button again, but when your garage is open its like basically inviting burglars to come inside. If you have a habit of leaving the garage door open invest in a timer that signals your garage door to close after a set amount of time.

Don’t ever forget that your garage is also an easy entry point for burglars, you need to keep it locked and secure at all times to protect yourself and your loved ones, fortunately these tips can help keep your garage safe and secure

Why a security system is cheaper than a burglary

Is the reason you don’t have a home security system because you think it’s way too expensive?  You’d be surprised that it’s more affordable than you may think and it significantly reduces the chances of your home being broken into. Consider these good reasons why investing in a home security system is so much cheaper than suffering financially and emotionally after a burglary.

  o   Improving your Odds
Weigh the cost of a security system against the cost of a burglary, odds are that every 1 in 3 homes without a security system will get broken into, so a home security system is a smart investment.

  o   Avoid Property Damage
Almost 100% of burglaries happen by force, like smashing a window or breaking in a door, this means that not only do you have to pay for stolen goods but also for property damage.

  o   Wireless Protection
With a wireless system no holes are drilled and it’s easy to pack up and move, not only that but it can’t be disarmed by cutting telephone or alarm wires.

  o   Future Prevention
It’s very common for a burglar to target a home more than once, if you've already been a victim of a break-in it’s definitely a good idea to install a security system so the burglars don’t return and cost you more expenses.

  o    Replacing Property
Only about 13% of burglaries are solved by the police and there’s even less of a chance of you getting your stuff back. The cost of replacing your expensive jewelry, appliances or laptops will cost more than just paying for a home security system for one year.

  o    Safety
It’s quite hard to put a price tag on a burglary because it can really devastate you emotionally and physically, in some break-ins the burglars may use violence so you’ll also be faced with medical bills.

  o   Help Save your Life
Keep in mind that a home security system can also protect you from dangerous hazards like fires and flooding, which can help protect you and
your loved ones.

  o   Cost of Loss
Depending on the area you live in, there is a chance your home could be burglarized, home security system prices are all different, but it will cost
much less than the average burglary.

It is confirmed that the cost of a home security system is far less compared to the emotional and financial trauma caused by a burglary; it’s time for you to protect yourself and your family and installing a home security system is by far the best option.
